Grants have been awarded for clinic and educational equipment, campus building campaigns, scholarships and research endowments, lectureships and annual operating expenses. Additionally, we honored the memory of original trustees with gifts in their names.
On November 16, 1960, a group of family practice physicians agreed to establish a hospital. In December 1964, after years of research, negotiation, and personal financial commitments, construction of Doctors’ Hospital was begun at 2323 S. Harvard, Tulsa, Oklahoma.
On August 29, 1966, the nonprofit hospital opened its doors, the first doctor-managed hospital west of the Mississippi to be built completely with private funds. Doctors’ Hospital flourished under the guidance of this group of family practitioners.
Family Medicine became a recognized medical specialty a few years after the hospital was built. The vision, commitment and advocacy of our founders contributed to continuing advancements in this important are of practice, to launching the careers of skilled physicians, and to improving health care for so many in the Tulsa Community.
Doctors' Hospital was sold on September 29, 1983. Founders of Doctors' Hospital, Inc, a non-profit corporation, was established with the proceeds of the sale to continue the charitable contributions of these dedicated family physicians.
